Mapping Your Hunt: Ben’s Story
“Last year at this time, I walked away from a job that many people in my field would do nearly anything to have. I was the senior Cartographer at the National Counterterrorism Center, staring down the barrel of a lifetime career in the Washington DC metro. For six years I helped deliver finished intelligence to the Nation’s top security officials. Sounds pretty cool, right? No doubt it was—but deep down something else consumed me. As I’m writing this, its my one year anniversary for going “all-in” with HUNTERRA.
*HUNTERRA specializes in custom maps for hunters and land specialists.
In 2010 I made a map of the ground I grew up hunting in Western PA for a Father’s Day gift for my Dad. Since the land we hunted was strictly timber, I discovered a unique way to add terrain to the aerial photo so we could better understand how Whitetails use topography for survival. Dad and I didn’t hunt agricultural land, so pinpointing ridges, saddles, and benches were vital to our success. Revealing these key features on the map—despite being in a sea of hardwoods—was a game changer for us and my future.
Soon enough Dad’s friends (and their friend’s) were asking me to map their land. From these first few jobs I realized the need for maps specifically designed for hunters, and HUNTERRA Mapping was born. Word-of-mouth spread, and business organically grew. Fast forward to the summer of 2013, and I was doing all I could to keep the orders from log-jamming. Still in the thick of a very demanding job at the Counterterrorism Center, my insanely generous wife Kate quit her job to help me keep the business afloat. We quickly developed a tag-team approach with fulfilling each custom map order, and in the months ahead realized that growing HUNTERRA was a once in a lifetime opportunity we had to pursue.
Spending time with family over the holidays, we put a gameplan together that would lead us to the Midwest—to the heart of our primary market—where many hardcore deer hunters and land specialists operate. We sold our house on June 26th, 2014 and spent the next three monthsliving and working out of a renovated 1979 Airstream that we call the Mobile Map Cave. It was an important trip for us to rid all of the stress from uprooting, and to focus on the next chapter of growing HUNTERRA. In September 2014, we pulled into southeast Iowa and quickly began to take advantage of our new local network.

Taking a leap of faith to head west and pursue the unknown was not easy, and in fact it was down-right scary. The guilt of leaving a coveted job and moving further away from our families weighed heavily on me. But we were given the chance to make a living at what we love, and this doesn’t happen in every lifetime. Sometimes a gut feeling needs to be trusted to the end, and I count my blessings with everything in life that led to HUNTERRA.

Later this year we’ll be launching some exciting new products. Kate and I established this company on word-of-mouth referrals, and as we continue to grow we will never lose focus on providing superior customer service. Our maps are like no other you’ve seen or touched, and we will continue to raise the bar with innovative map technologies. Finally, by the time you’re reading this, I’ve set the first trail cameras on my first hunting opportunity in Iowa. Exciting and challenging times lie ahead for my personal hunting goals and HUNTERRA in its new home state.”

Map The Hunt,
In 2005 I started my career by offering an extremely personal, hand-illustrated Habitat and Hunting Design for my clients, which at the time was uncommon in whitetail habitat design circles. Even more uncommon (still to this day) was that from my very first client I began the process of designing the plan together, In Person at the end of the visit; which I have found to be critical to a client’s ultimate success! Pencils, rulers and graph paper helped to deliver a finished product, but it was far from attractive. I eventually jumped from pencils, to colored pencils, to plain white paper, to fine-point permanent marker designs. In 2013 I still thought that the designs lacked the professional appeal I was searching for, so during the last 3 years I have been capturing screen-shot aerial photos, as a canvas for over 200 fine point stylus whitetail designs through power point software. My most recent process of delivering your design (always in-person, with you at the end of the visit) was a giant leap in quality when compared to using pencils, rulers and markers, but I still wasn’t happy. Along came HUNTERRA
As of April of 2015, I will now be mapping your hunt, with clients designs that are being created in partnership with HUNTERRA! Your map is included within your site visit fee, and we also made the decision to provide maps for clients who I created an initial site visit design, going back to December of 2014. While the information is still the same, the presentation of your personal and site specific habitat and hunting design has once again, greatly improved. Ben has created an outstanding way for mapping your hunt through HUNTERRA, and I am very excited to deliver this product to you, my clients. I hope that even if you do not choose my services for creating your professional habitat and hunting design, that you still will choose HUNTERRA for mapping your hunt.
Thank you Ben for creating such outstanding family-based hunting products, and for helping Whitetail Habitat Solutions, LLC to create our best habitat and hunting designs since being founded in 2005.
